Great news!
I’ve been invited to lead a series of group motorcycle tours of Cuba aimed at U.S. citizens for Edelweiss Bike Travel.
In September I thrilled to a 9-day ‘Best of Europe’ tour with Edelweiss Bike Travel, then spent a weekend with the staff at the company headquarters in Mieming, Austria.
Edelweiss has for several years had a fleet of BMW and Harley-Davidson motorcycles in Cuba, and has operated tours there for a non-U.S. clientele. During my meeting in Mieming, I was asked to redesign the company’s popular 8-day ‘Best of Cuba’ and 11-day ‘Classic Cuba’ trips to conform with U.S. regulations. The trips will be offered for the U.S. market beginning in 2018 under a general license for ‘people-to-people’ educational exchange per Cuba Assets Control Regulations, 31 CFR Part 515 administered by the Dept. of Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Controls.
I’ve been passionate about my love and knowledge of Cuba since I began traveling there in 1992 as a licensed journalist.
In 1996, I shipped my BMW R100GS PD to Cuba and rode more than 7,000 miles during a three-month motorcycle journey , resulting in publication of his Moon Cuba guidebook, and my award-winning National Geographic travelogue Mi Moto Fidel: Motorcycling Through Castro’s Cuba.
I’ve since authored and photographed five other books about Cuba, where I currently spend some six months every year researching magazine stories and leading tours for National Geographic Expeditions and others. I’m proud to have since been acclaimed by National Geographic as “One of the world’s leading authorities on Cuban travel and culture,”
Ever since my 1996 motorcycle journey, I dreamed of one day being able to operate group motorcycle tours in Cuba.
In January 2013, I secured a license authorizing the first such programs under the “people-to-people“ license category. That year he led the first U.S. motorcycle group tour of Cuba end-to-end since the 1959 Revolution and has since led numerous motorcycle tours through Cuba, plus almost one hundred ‘people-to-people’ programs for National Geographic Expeditions, among others.
Now I take great pride in being able to support Edelweiss Bike Travel, the world’s largest and most reputable motorcycle tour company, in making Cuba tours available to U.S. riders… and to ensuring that they’re as satisfying an experience as possible.
With me as your tour leader guarantees that joining one of these group motorcycle tours will be immensely rewarding and memorable. Your itinerary will include activities that provide a fascinating overview of Cuba’s history and culture while maximizing interaction with many of my personal acquaintances, which include Cubans of renown from all walks of life… from artists, musicians, and baseball players to local harlistas (owners of pre-revolutionary Harley-Davidsons).
