In 1996 Christopher shipped his BMW R100GS PD to Cuba and rode more than 7,000 miles during a three-month motorcycle journey as a licensed journalist, resulting in publication of his Moon Cuba guidebook and his award-winning National Geographic travelogue Mi Moto Fidel: Motorcycling Through Castro’s Cuba.
In January 2013, Christopher secured a license authorizing the first group motorcycle tours in Cuba for U.S. citizens under the ‘people-to-people’ license category. That year he led the first U.S. motorcycle group tour of Cuba end-to-end since the 1959 Revolution. He has since led more than 150 group programs in Cuba for National Geographic Expeditions, among others, including more than two dozen motorcycle tours for the BMW Rider Academy of Turkey, Bob’s BMW of Maine, Edelweiss Bike Travel, and others. He has also arranged U.S.-legal motorcycle tours of Cuba for several dozen individuals using BMW F700GSs.
Christopher arranges custom group motorcycle and solo rides on request.
These programs are U.S.-legal under the “Support for the Cuban people” license. Every U.S. citizen can legally travel to Cuba under this unwritten, pre-approved, license. This program is designed to maximize “support for the Cuban people” through stays at private B&Bs, meals at private restaurants, and interactions with independent artists, private tobacco farmers, owners of classic convertible taxis and motorcycles, etc.
